Brownhills is a small former mining town in the borough of Walsall, in the West Midlands and traditionally part of the Black Country. It sits on the edge of urban West Midlands yet close to areas of open countryside such as Cannock Chase, and is crossed by canal and former railway routes including the Wyrley and Essington Canal, which give it a pleasantly mixed town-and-country feel.
Historically the town grew up around coal and clay extraction in the 19th century, leaving an industrial legacy that survives in street patterns and local buildings. Today Brownhills functions largely as a residential and commuter community for nearby Birmingham, with a modest high street, active community groups and sports clubs, canal towpaths and green spaces that play a big part in local social life.
