Wokingham

Unitary authority in England

Coordinates:51.46, -0.9
OS grid ref:SU 76 73

Wokingham is a compact unitary authority in the county of Berkshire, sitting on the northern edge of the Thames Valley between Reading and Bracknell. The area combines a historic market-town core with suburban neighbourhoods and surrounding villages, set against rolling Berkshire countryside and green belt land.

The borough grew from a medieval market town and still has a busy high street with independent shops, regular community events and an active local arts scene. There are a number of historic buildings and parish churches dotted across the area, and local festivals and carnivals help sustain a strong community identity.

Economically it forms part of the wider Thames Valley services and technology corridor and acts in large part as a commuter area, with rail connections to Reading and London and quick road access to the M4 and M3. The borough is noted for good schools, relatively high household incomes and plenty of parks and commons that give a semi‑rural feel while keeping major employment centres within easy reach.
