Rothesay is the principal town on the east coast of the Isle of Bute in Argyll and Bute, Scotland, looking out over the Firth of Clyde. It grew as a popular Victorian seaside resort for Glaswegians and still bears that legacy in its long promenade, pier and period architecture; the town is anchored by the medieval Rothesay Castle and lies close to the dramatic, Victorian Gothic Mount Stuart house and estate.
Today the local economy leans on tourism, day visitors and ferries from the mainland (notably the link with Wemyss Bay), together with small-scale fishing, shops and cafés. There’s a strong island community spirit and active, community-led efforts to preserve the town’s heritage and host seasonal events, giving Rothesay a compact, welcoming feel with much of its character tied to both history and the Clyde maritime scene.
