Bute sits in the Firth of Clyde off the west coast of Scotland, administratively part of Argyll and Bute, and is dominated by the compact town of Rothesay with its Victorian promenade, pier and medieval Rothesay Castle. The island is reached by regular ferries from Wemyss Bay and offers a mix of gentle farmland, coastal cliffs and sea lochs that make it popular for walking, cycling and wildlife watching.
Historically the island has strong ties to the Bute family and their showy seat, Mount Stuart House, whose Gothic revival architecture and extensive gardens draw many visitors; today the local economy leans on tourism, agriculture and a small resident community of craftspeople and commuters, with a lively summer programme of events and a reputation for a mild, sheltered climate compared with much of the Scottish mainland.
