Gowkthrapple is a small post‑war housing estate on the edge of Wishaw in North Lanarkshire, Scotland. Originally built to house workers in nearby heavy industry such as the Ravenscraig steelworks, it became known for its distinctive name and its blocks of council housing; the area suffered economic and social decline after industrial closures in the late 20th century.
In recent years parts of Gowkthrapple have been demolished and rebuilt as part of local regeneration schemes, and community projects have worked to improve facilities and reputation. Located in Scotland’s central belt with road and rail links into Glasgow and Edinburgh, the neighbourhood now combines ongoing economic challenges with a determined local community and new housing developments.
