New Tredegar is a small former coal-mining community set in the uplands of the Rhymney Valley within the county borough of Caerphilly, Wales. Perched on the valley side, it offers sweeping views towards the Brecon Beacons and sits close to neighbouring valley towns such as Rhymney and Bargoed, reflecting the typical ribbon development of the South Wales valleys.
Like many valley communities it grew rapidly in the 19th century to serve the coal industry and retains strong cultural markers of that past - chapels, miners’ institutes, rugby clubs and brass-band traditions. The closure of the pits brought economic challenges, but there has been steady community-led regeneration, local shops and social projects, and many residents now commute to larger centres such as Cardiff while maintaining an active local civic life.
