Pontyberem is a small community in Carmarthenshire, Wales, tucked into the Gwendraeth Valley a short drive from Llanelli and the coast of Carmarthen Bay. The village grew up around coal mining in the 19th and 20th centuries, and that industrial past still shapes the place in the form of reclaimed spoil tips, miners’ terraces and a strong sense of local history.
Today Pontyberem has a lively community life rooted in Welsh language, chapel and choir traditions, and local sport such as rugby, while the economy has shifted towards commuting, light industry and agriculture. It’s a good example of a former mining settlement that’s kept its cultural identity while the surrounding countryside slowly reclaims parts of the industrial landscape, making it attractive for walks and local heritage interest.
