The Cwm-twrch ward lies in south‑west Powys, close to the county border with Neath Port Talbot and within easy reach of Swansea. It occupies a narrow, steep valley carved by the River Twrch, with moorland and pastoral slopes rising towards the Black Mountain and the western fringes of the Brecon Beacons National Park.
Locally the character is rural - sheep farming and smallholdings are common - but the community bears the imprint of nearby 19th‑ and early 20th‑century mining and metalworking. Small villages and hamlets maintain strong community ties, and outdoor recreation such as walking and riding, along with low‑key tourism, plays an important part in the local economy and social life.
