Ynyscedwyn is a small ward in Powys tucked into the upper Tawe valley close to the town of Ystradgynlais. The area is framed by steep, grassy hills and moorland that lead up towards the Brecon Beacons, giving it a noticeable rural character despite its industrial past, with the River Tawe running through the valley floor.
Historically the community grew around 19th‑century ironworking and coal mining, and traces of that industrial heritage still dot the landscape in the form of old works and reclamation sites. Today the ward is largely residential with a mix of local services, outdoor recreation opportunities and a continued sense of local identity shaped by Welsh language and valley culture, while many residents commute to nearby towns for work.
