Tawe Uchaf is a rural ward in western Powys, sitting in the upper reaches of the River Tawe where the valley narrows into upland moor and woodland at the edge of the Brecon Beacons. The landscape is a patchwork of small villages, farms and open hillsides, popular with walkers and wildlife watchers for its scenery and access to quiet lanes and footpaths.
The local economy is largely agricultural, with hill farming and a modest amount of tourism supporting community life; there is also a visible legacy of past industry in disused quarries and old tramways. Culturally the ward retains a strong Welsh feel, with local events and a good level of Welsh language use, and its combination of historic routes and outdoor recreation gives it a distinctly rural, lived-in character on the fringe of the Swansea Valley.
