Loughor is a small town on the western edge of Swansea in Wales, sitting on the eastern bank of the River Loughor estuary opposite Llanelli. Its location by the tidal estuary and nearby Gower Peninsula gives it wide mudflats and salt‑marshes that attract birdlife, and the riverside setting has shaped both its medieval origins and later industrial development.
The settlement grew around the Norman motte-and-bailey of Loughor Castle and, like much of the area, saw 19th‑century tinplate and light industry before becoming largely residential; today it’s a commuter community with a strong local identity, pockets of Welsh language use and an active village life centred on sport and community groups.
