Horden is a coastal village and civil parish in County Durham, in north‑east England, set on the Durham coastline between Peterlee and Seaham. Its shoreline fronts the North Sea and the area is associated with the Durham Coast, known for sandy beaches, low cliffs and wildlife interest. The village layout and housing still reflect its origins as a purpose‑built mining community, with local clubs, churches and green spaces forming a visible community fabric.
Originally developed around Horden Colliery in the early 20th century, the village was heavily affected by the pit closures in the late 20th century and experienced economic hardship and regeneration challenges. Recent years have seen investment and community initiatives to revive local facilities and transport links - a new railway station reopening in 2020 improved connections towards Sunderland and Newcastle - while residents continue to emphasise strong local identity and resilience.
