The ward covers the coastal villages of Beer and Branscombe on the east-facing side of the Jurassic Coast in East Devon, Devon, England. The landscape is dramatic - steep wooded valleys, limestone and chalk cliffs, a shingle beach at Beer and sweeping coastal views enjoyed from the South West Coast Path - which makes it popular with walkers and anyone fascinated by geology and seascapes.
Historically the area combined small-scale fishing and the famous local quarrying of Beer stone with farming, and there are plenty of local stories about smuggling and maritime life. Branscombe retains a notably well-preserved village character with thatched cottages and a traditional mill, while Beer still shows its links to fishing and stoneworking; today the economy leans on tourism, crafts and agriculture and the communities remain tightly knit with seasonal events and local services.
