Bridgwater is a historic market town and civil parish in Somerset, England, sited where the low-lying Somerset Levels meet the tidal River Parrett. The town grew up around a medieval bridge and an important local port, and its flat, marshy hinterland has long influenced drainage works, trade routes and the character of the riverside landscape.
Historically important for shipping and local industry, Bridgwater has links to figures such as Admiral Robert Blake and to events like the Monmouth Rebellion, and retains a strong market-town culture with museums, a busy market and one of the country's best-known illuminated carnivals. Today it combines light industry, distribution and service roles, local regeneration projects and the economic influence of nearby infrastructure such as the M5 and Hinkley Point, while remaining a community shaped by its riverside setting.
