Ormiston is a small planned village in rural East Lothian, Scotland, set in rolling farmland on the fringes of the Lammermuir Hills and within easy commuting distance of Edinburgh. Its position away from the coast gives it a quiet, agricultural feel while still being handy for larger towns and good country walking.
The village was laid out in the 18th century as a model settlement by the reforming laird John Cockburn, originally to promote modern agricultural practices and local trades; later it developed links with light industry and mining in the area. Today Ormiston retains a strong community spirit, a conservation-minded village core with period buildings, a primary school and local amenities, making it a typical but characterful East Lothian village with both historic interest and contemporary commuter life.
