Coaltown of Balgonie is a small village in central Fife, Scotland, tucked between the larger towns of Glenrothes and Markinch. It sits in gently rolling lowlands of the Fife countryside, surrounded by farmland and pockets of woodland, and retains a compact, village feel despite being within easy reach of regional amenities and rail links from nearby towns.
The settlement grew up in the 19th century around local coal workings and miners’ housing, and traces of that industrial past still shape its character though the pits have long closed. Close by is the medieval Balgonie Castle, a striking reminder of the area’s deeper history, while today the village is largely residential with a tight-knit community whose residents often commute to jobs in Glenrothes and elsewhere in Fife.
