Porth sits at the gateway to the twin valleys of the Rhondda in Rhondda Cynon Taf, where the valley floor widens and the River Rhondda runs through. The town expanded rapidly in the 19th century with the coal boom and served as a busy rail and commercial hub for nearby pits; echoes of that industrial past can be seen in former terraced miners' housing and at the nearby Rhondda Heritage Park.
Today Porth has a compact town centre of shops, cafés and local services alongside community-led regeneration efforts, while the surrounding steep hills offer popular walks and sweeping valley views. There remains a strong local identity rooted in chapel and working-class traditions, even as many people commute to Cardiff and other centres for work.
