Shapwick is a small village and civil parish in Somerset, set on the southern edge of the Somerset Levels beside the River Brue, a short distance from Glastonbury. The surrounding low-lying landscape is dominated by wetland ditches and reedbeds and includes Shapwick Heath, part of the Avalon Marshes and a nationally important reserve for birds, waders and other peatland wildlife.
Locally the area is still rooted in agriculture but conservation and quiet tourism around the nature reserves and archaeology are increasingly important. The parish has deep historic interest - nearby finds such as the Neolithic Sweet Track underline the long human use of the Levels - and the village retains a small, close-knit community with traditional buildings and a medieval church reflecting its rural past.
