Maesteg sits in the Llynfi Valley in Bridgend, Wales, a former coal and ironworking community now framed by steep, green hills and the course of the Llynfi river. Its industrial past shaped much of the town’s character - rows of terraced houses, working men’s clubs and long‑standing local sporting traditions - but the valley setting also makes it a handy base for walkers and people exploring the South Wales Valleys.
Since the decline of heavy industry the town has focused on regeneration and local services, with a mix of small shops, community projects and commuter links (the Maesteg rail line connects through to Cardiff) helping the economy. Culturally there’s a strong sense of community, with Welsh‑language presence, choirs, amateur theatre and sports clubs keeping local life active and rooted in its historic valley identity.
