Ystradgynlais sits in western Powys in the Swansea Valley on the banks of the River Tawe, at the western edge of the Brecon Beacons. The town expanded in the 19th century with coal, iron and related industries, leaving an industrial heritage of former pits and works; since the decline of heavy industry the local economy has shifted towards light manufacturing, retail and services while many residents commute further afield.
There’s a strong local community spirit rooted in Welsh cultural traditions - chapels, choirs and club life remain important - and the surrounding hills and reservoirs make it a handy base for walking and outdoor pursuits. Community events and sports, particularly rugby, continue to play a big role in social life.
